Chelsea is an area in south west London, in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is between Walham Green and Belgravia, and south east of Kensington. Chelsea is close to West Brompton Railway Station and South Kensington Underground Station. It is connected to areas south of the Thames by Battersea Bridge, and is about 30 minutes away from Heathrow Airport.
Chelsea has always been an affluent area, ever since it became the home of two of Henry VIII’s wives in the 1500s. It was, however, largely rural until a large number of buildings and housing were built there in the 19th century. During the 1800s it was home to the silk trade, and had a porcelain factory. It also developed a bohemian reputation as the home of artists and radicals. Today these industries and associations have largely gone, and Chelsea is known as the exclusive home of wealthy business people and celebrities.
Chelsea has a number of places to eat. It is home to several high end restaurants, including Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant on Royal Hospital Road. It also has a number of cafes, which are known for their brunch menus, and a range of pubs.
Chelsea has several arts and performance venues. It is home to Cadogan Hall, which hosts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This is frequently the venue for the BBC Proms Chamber Music Series, and puts on classical, jazz, folk and world music concerts. Also in the area are The Royal Court Theatre and the Saatchi Gallery, which displays contemporary art.
